Screening is not generally practiced in North America. There are three approaches to early detection.
• Your awareness of typical signs and symptoms and your calling them to the attention of your physician.
• A careful examination of the head and neck by your doctor, including an examination of the larynx with the aid
of a mirror (indirect laryngoscopy) or a scope.
• Your dentist is in an excellent position to call your attention to suspicious lesions in the mouth such as the
premalignant lesion called leukoplakia (white patches). Many oral cancers are discovered by dentists.
